Before you ask, I have read the sticky thread and read it THOROUGHLY. I probably am -planning- to play Guild Wars since it looks awesomely interesting ( Though I do play plenty of other online games aswell, so I'm not a stranger to video games ) And at first I had thought you had to buy all the "chapters" (THIS close to calling it expansion packs -centimeter's worth- ) but I have decided to only buy Prophecies (Original Guild Wars right...?) and Nightfall. But I still have a few more questions to ask.

What is Eye of The North? Is it the next chapter? When is it's release date? (or is it out already?)

*Same for Guild Wars 2*

Should I buy Factions eventually? Is there any point to it or should I just leave it alone, unless I want an Assassin/Ritualist? Is the game worth it?

Another thing to consider, is that I'm not really PvP savvy. Just if that helps answer the Factions question.

1) Eye of the North is the only "expansion pack". It's been out for a little over a year now. You must have at least one of the other games to play it, also your character must be at least level 10 (that's really not hard to accomplish at all).

2) Guild Wars 2, you know as much as we do.

3) There are some great skills in Factions that you'll be missing, but if you're only doing PvE, it's not really required. I'd suggest getting it just so you have access to all the skills and another full game to play, but if you're not interested and/or cash-strapped I wouldn't blame you one bit.

Hopefully I'll see you in-game someday.

Well, to answer your questions...

1. It's out, and it's the only expansion, as you need to have a "campaign" to use it, however it's the least necessary campaign, but in my opinion has some of the best benefits.

2. Guild Wars 2, if you intend on playing it, you should seek back to question 1, as you can bring some accomplishments over to GW2 from Guild Wars, via the Hall of Monuments in the Eye of the North.

3. Factions is honestly my favorite campaign, and I love ritualists, so I think you'd be missing out, but you don't need it no. (it's also the shortest campaign, so again, not missing out on TOO much)

4. Although others may argue with me, I would personally suggest starting your character in Factions or Nightfall, I /HATE/ making characters in prophecies.... It takes much longer, and is overall (again, in my opinion) much less fun. It's not nearly as bad if you're playing with a few friends, but as you're new to the game, I'd suggest starting in Nightfall, as it's the easiest one. (I personally started in Factions my first time)

Welcome to Guild Wars, and I hope you enjoy it. ^^ If you need help with anything, or more questions, feel free to contact me here, in-game, whatever.

Well, I'm a really really new player, and as much as I would like to start in Nightfall, I'd probably be like "LOLWAT?" at everything x.x And it would really upset me if I didn't know what heck I was doing or know how to play.

Maybe since I've never played Prophecies, it would be o-kay >.> But I swear, if Prophecies gets on my nerve, I'll go to Nightfall :3 I'm buying the two together, most likely at the same time and probably plan on getting Factions later

Also another pair of questions

Should I get Eye of the North with Prophecies/Nightfall? Or just get it later?

What is the most popular profession(s) in Guild Wars? The easiest? Are they all good? Not like I'm going to choose it, but I don't want to make a bad choice and end up screwing up a character.

My suggestion to you is get factions and EotN. You'll need them both for MOST good builds, also if you join a guild, they will more than likely want you to donate faction. Plus having an assassin is always a fun play and a money maker.

The popularity of professions changes with the latest "have to have" skill build. As the use of secondary professions allows a lot of leeway on the focus of your character, there isn't really a bad primary profession choice.

What you will enjoy playing is more important. I have almost one of each and find that monking is not really my thing. I think she'll finish one campaign and be shelved. With that in mind, remember that with two campaigns linked you will have 6 character slots with no penalty for deleting/recreating. If you find you don't like your first character, just change it.

In the Campfire section here on guru, there are subforums for each profession. Each subforum has a basic guide that explains quite a lot about playing that profession.

Trolls aside, welcome to GW and guru. Let us know when you've started (you can post another question) and you'll be surprised at the people willing to help.

If you haven't bought any of the campaigns yet, I'd look into the Platinum edition(s) and the Trilogy edition. Trilogy edition has all 3 campaigns (but not eye of the north)

Also, out of the two "Platinum" editions, the Factions Platinum edition is the wiser choice IMO because it includes Prophecies and Factions, plus the Bonus Mission Pack for free. (9.99 value) Another reason why I like this, is because the Bonus Mission pack grants 500g every time you complete one of the 4 missions, and 2.5k every discovery made, so if you get all the discoveries first try, you'd make.... 34 platinum by running all 4 missions twice. A nice bonus to help you get started

Don't buy from the online store, look around Amazon.com and such, a friend of mine got EoTN for something like 20 bucks there.

Prophecies Platinum edition comes with Prophecies and EoTN.

Personally, I'd suggest getting them all at the same time, due to how easy it makes things. (At level 12 if you start in NF you can go to EoTN and get max armor, or take a ferry to max armor at level 2 for ~500g)

Also, as for what character to make... you can change your attributes, skills, and secondary prof. in town anytime you want once you're ascended, which is roughly 2/3 the way through prophecies, or 1/4 the way through factions/NF

Another reason why I'd suggest NF to be honest... you get PvE-only skills at level ~4, max armor at level ~3 (if you have 5.5k plus materials) you can get your 30 attribute points at level ~6 (In factions you need to be level ~15 and past when you'd get to level 20 in prophecies)
Plus doing quests there get you better free stuff, and heroes... But I ramble :P (I really like how easy it is to start there)

Overall, you have 4 character slots starting, and +2 for any campaign you get, so you'll be able to have 8 characters when you have everything. Enough to make one of every (but two) So you'll have plenty of time to make anything you'd like. Personally, I started out as a ranger, and hated it. Then I made a necro, and loved it. Later on, I made a ranger again, and loved it. ^^; As a starter class, I'd suggest a necro, elementalist, paragon, or ritualist.

So what would be prime:

either 3 choices
-Guild Wars Trilogy + Eye of North
-Lower Budget: Guild Wars Trilogy ( I've got like $50 bucks at Gamestop on a gift card)
-And If I can, Factions Platinum Edition + Eye of North + Prophecies + Nightfall

But 3rd choice may get expensive and I don't know how I could break it down without spending a shizload :P

Or any other suggestions that may be cheaper and I can still "possibly" get the packs. But hey, I could probably buy Guild Wars Trilogy OR Prophecies & Nightfall right off the bat because of my gift card, then get Factions Platinum and Eye of the North for Christmas.

And can you still get Platinum factions if you have the original factions? o.O;

You can add campaigns and the expansion to your account at any time, so you don't have to get it all at once. I started with just Prophecies, since I didn't know if I would even like the game. I loved it, and later added all the rest, plus the Bonus Mission Pack. So, pick whatever fits your budget now, and that should give you enough to do until you can afford to add on.

Personally, I'm glad I started with Prophecies. As a new player, it was good to take it a bit slow until I started to get the hang of the game, and Prophecies is definitely the most gentle introduction available. Plus, I wanted to experience the story right from the beginning, since story in a game is important to me. YMMV.

Basically, your third choice would only be viable if you can get all 3 campaigns cheaper separately than buying the Trilogy, since the Trilogy is the same 3 campaigns.

One note: If you buy the separate campaigns, be sure to create only one account and add each access key to that one account. That way, you'll be able to access all the content with all your characters. Many people, in the past, have made the mistake of creating a separate account for each campaign. (This is not a problem if you buy the Trilogy - there's only one key.)

Second note: You don't need to "install" each campaign. Just install one, create the account and then add any other access keys. (Again, not a prob if you get the Trilogy)

If you are an RPG fan (mostly into PvE) I'd suggest you start playing in Prophecies. First of all, you get to start out in Pre-Searing, which is a nice looking place and a good way to get your feet wet. Secondly, the path to get to level 20 is a lot longer in Prophecies, than it is in the other campaigns and is, therefore, more like a traditional RPG. Many people will tell you to start in some other campaign because it's "faster", but what's the hurry? Why be in a hurry to get the least value you can out of your money?

I would definitely suggest you get EoTN at some point.

About GW2 - there's really not much known about GW2 at this point, other than that it will be a follow-up to GW1. Given the expected time frame (and the relatively low cost of the Trilogy), it's worth it to get the Trilogy. You'll have lots of time to play GW1 before GW2 comes out, and GW1 will still be there even after GW2 arrives.

Honestly look at it this way. Factions platinum edition = prophecies and factions (with free bonus mission pack) or trilogy edition.

So, if factions platinum + NF = same cost (or up to 10 dollars more) it's the same deal or cheaper.

Factions platinum, again, is proph + Factions + BMP
Trilogy is Proph + Factions + NF.
I belive that factions platinum is 36 bucks in-store, and trilogy is 46 bucks.
So, if NF is equal or less than 20 bucks, get platinum, if not, get trilogy.

ANOTHER NOTE : Black friday is coming up, you could probably get them for cheap then. (I found best buy selling prophecies for 9.99 and EoTN for 19.99 last black friday)

Lastly, it's best to get all 4 at once, but it's not necessary. ^^
Prophecies = biggest, slowest, oldest, only core classes.
factions = shortest, personal fav.
NF = Heroes, lots of bonuses (free chests, better quest rewards, ect.)
EoTN = Lots of PvE-Only skills that can be used on any class.

I'd buy Trilogy.

I'd start in Prophesies, just because it is the beginning. After Pre-searing, the first parts are a grind but it gets much better once you get to Shiverpeaks. This is just my opinion.

If you do start in Prophesies, when you get to LA, switch to Nightfall for a few missions so you can use heroes, that you can equip with runes, weapons and skills. Then come back and finish Prophesies.

EOTN is great for dungeons, but, learn the game first and max out your armor and weapons.

I would recommend getting all campaigns. Starting in Factions will level you up quicker, it's slower in Prophecies, but if you want to take it slow and learn the mechanics then start in prophecies. I would recommend getting EToN for the simple fact that there are some great PVE skills that work great. The dungeons are fun to do.

edit: PM IGN: Neith Bow Mistress. I have an ele in Pre-searing if you wanna hang out. I'm on pretty much every night CST

Each chapter has an introductory section of the game, so it's perfectly feasible to start as a new player in Nightfall. You may miss a few story references, but not many.

Nightfall is, in my opinion, the best of the three in regards to teaching a new player how to actually play the game.

Hi and welcome to Guild Wars. I have all the games and have completed them all...but prophecies (the original Guild Wars) is still my favorite. Yes it's slow, but for a new player the beginning of prophs is a great tutorial on playing the game. Plus you get free skills in Prophecies for doing quests. I would suggest Nightfall or Eye of the North also so that you can get heroes...they make the game much easier. Good luck and have fun!

No offense Nightmare to what I'm about to say.
OP, please ignore this lamer. A lot of people have played this game for WAY TOO MUCH TIME EVERYDAY to think it's fun...afterall, if I played over 5 hours a day on average I'd be pretty friggin bored too. Enjoy the game and all it has to offer! As a new player I suggest you start in Prophecies b/c as you said, you might be like LOLWUT.

Welcome!

Well here is my two cents. If you buy one...BUY THEM ALL.

I'll give reasons...

1) Cheapest to get everything all at once in one box.

2) Prophecies - the original GW - will not let you partake in some of the major events as you can not get to them - like the cartha New Year Board walk thing

3) Skills. You are going to be SADLY under balanced.

4) SHADOW FORM - for running and exploring and just fast running when you want to get titles

5) Titles and fame - You will not get everything and once again be left out

6) 100's more reasons but lastly

7) HALL OF MONUMENTS - This nifty area will let you display your honors that you have achieved during your epic run in GW.

Not to mention that something will be transferred from the HoM to GW2. No one knows what this is yet but weapons and armor are some of the tings that you can put into the hall. Given that this new game will take place in the future from GW1 you might be able to uncover some of this armor or even these weapons in GW2 making you ELITE Right off the bat.

All that said, Should GW2 be awesome and they still want GW1 to thrive there had better be some wicked things in GW2 to get that tie to the GW1 storyline or GW1 will be dead in the water.

But if they want GW1 To thrive then they need to seamlessly tie the two together.

Myself, I am filling my hall with junk so that I can get as much stuff to GW2 as possible. I am gambling on GWEN Mini as one of those things that will be a nice transfer. She cost me a lot of gold to put in my hall
